Hillside V-Ditch Repair

Crack repair and full replacement of the concrete drainage ditches that protect slopes on hillside communities.

Newly poured hillside V-ditch after full replacement

The problem

V-ditches carry runoff down slopes. When they crack or break apart, water goes under the concrete and into the slope instead of down the channel, and that is how slope erosion and undermining start.

When it applies

  • Cracks running along or across a V-ditch channel.
  • Sections heaved, settled, or separated at the joints.
  • Ditches undermined by erosion or broken by root growth.
  • A reserve study or inspection has flagged slope drainage.

How we do it

  1. 1

    Inspect the full run

We walk the ditch from top to bottom and document every crack, separation, and broken section, not just the one that was reported.

  2. 2

Crack repair where the ditch is sound

Cracks are cleaned, opened, and sealed so water stays in the channel. The repair follows the profile of the ditch.

  3. 3

Full replacement where it is not

Sections that are broken, heaved, or undermined are removed and re-poured to the original profile and grade.

Hillside communities in Orange County depend on concrete V-ditches that are easy to forget until a slope starts to move. CHS repairs them in two ways: crack sealing where the ditch is structurally sound, and full removal and replacement where sections are broken or undermined.

The brochure photos on this page show both, from the same kind of hillside properties we serve today.
